From my perspective, if you're looking for higher purpose, you really have two places to look - inward or outward.
If you're looking inward, let me give you the summary as to how that will pan out. We have documentation from a very accomplished wise man to show us the error of heading down this path. King Solomon provided us an excessively saddening account of his life and his life lessons in the book of Ecclesiastes (see reference below). In summary:
Now, Solomon didn't say these things were wrong or evil of themselves. Solomon said his heart found pleasure in these things and I'm sure the building of the Temple and wisdom given him to rule his people accomplished a great amount of social good. But in looking back on them Solomon concluded that they meant nothing apart from God. Searching inwardly for purpose excludes God, and will leave you wanting.
So what does have purpose? Solomon determined that had his life pursuits included fearing God and keeping His commandments, as that is the whole duty of man, God would have brought those deeds into judgment and found them to be good rather than evil. As Jesus tells us, we must love God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. In His love for us, Christ Jesus accomplished this task on the cross. And as He has been raised from the dead and is now seated at the right hand of the Father, Christ acts as our mediator to the Father. By the power of Christ we can live a life of purpose where our motivations and actions can please God.
So seek to give God glory and honor in all that you do. Through Jesus, you have a higher purpose.
